At Rockstar Blends, we believe in the therapeutic powers of whole plant ingredients, and the wisdom of centuries in utilizing them for our greater health and well-being.

If you're reading this, you may already know that we also believe that the benefits of our blends are much greater than the simple sum of our ingredients. Its what we mean when we talk about the Rockstar Blends "entourage effect".

Every botanical in our blends is chosen for as much for the way it works in synergy with others as it is for its own unique attributes and properties, and that includes the next botanical in this series, jojoba, or Simmondsia chinensis.

In our most recent podcast we touched on why we choose jojoba for Rockstar Blends, because it naturally allows our ingredients to penetrate deeply while enriching our skin's outer defenses, instead of tearing them down.

"If there’s one ingredient that works for everyone, everywhere, it’s jojoba oil. More than just a carrier, it’s a key player in every formula we create."

Its unique chemical composition makes jojoba the ultimate 100% plant-based carrier oil, ensuring that our other powerful botanical ingredients absorb deeply and safely to support skin health, hydration, and protection. And its not just us saying that.

"Collectively, our results further demonstrate that jojoba can reduce local skin inflammation... In addition, the finding that topical application of jojoba wax enhances the synthesis of pro-collagen and hyaluronic acid and may be beneficial in the treatment of age-related manifestations."

Jojoba Oil:  More Than A Molecular Match for Human Skin

Unlike most plant-based oils, which contain triglycerides, jojoba is really a wax, comprised of fatty esters, acids & alcohols. This makes it molecularly similar to the oils produced by our own skin known as sebum. This remarkable similarity appears to amplify transdermal absorption of jojoba itself - and the botanicals carried with.

Modern research suggests that jojoba oil enhances wound healing, reduces inflammation, and has antimicrobial properties, making it a powerful ingredient in dermatology, therapeutic skincare, and even transdermal drug delivery (National Library of Medicine).

Wisdom Discovered in Extremes

We love it when science confirms what history has acted upon all along.

For centuries, indigenous peoples of the Sonoran Desert have harnessed the benefits of jojoba. They produced an antioxidant salve from jojoba seeds to treat burns and skin ailments. Jojoba oil was applied to hair and bodies for conditioning and protection against the harsh desert environment.

Jojoba was as a therapeutic for liver and kidney disorders, obesity, parturition, sore throat, superficial wound healing, warts, psoriasis, acne, sunburn, and treatment of poison ivy exposure (National Library of Medicine).

Some tribes also consumed jojoba seeds to alleviate hunger during long journeys, while pregnant women believed the seeds facilitated childbirth.

In the late 18th century, Jesuit missionaries in Baja California observed Indigenous communities heating jojoba seeds to create salves for skin and hair care.

These practices piqued the interest of European settlers, leading to the introduction of jojoba to Europe. Notably, botanist Archibald Menzies transported jojoba plants to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in 1793, marking the plant's initial entry into European botanical studies.

During World War II, jojoba oil emerged as a valuable substitute for dwindling supplies of other oil resources. It was utilized as an additive for motor, transmission, and gear oils, and even for lubricating machine guns, given its chemical stability and resistance to oxidation. USDA

The environmental movement of the 1970s gave jojoba yet another life, as a sustainable alternative to sperm whale oil, widely used at the time in cosmetics and lubricants.

This shift not only contributed to whale conservation efforts but also spurred the commercial cultivation of jojoba in desert regions, transforming it into a significant economic crop.

Jojoba: More Than a Carrier Oil

Jojoba oil is more than just a carrier—it’s an active ingredient with powerful benefits all on its own. From the Indigenous healers of the Sonoran Desert to modern dermatologists and formulators, jojoba has earned its reputation as one of nature’s most versatile and effective plant-based oils.

Its ability to mimic human sebum makes it a biological match for skin, offering deep hydration, balancing oil production, and delivering nutrients in a way that feels completely natural. It’s an incredible stabilizer, extending the potency and shelf life of delicate botanical compounds, ensuring that ingredients like frankincense, copaiba, and rose damascena retain their maximum effectiveness.

As one of the most eco-friendly and renewable skincare ingredients, it continues to replace harmful synthetics and animal-derived oils, helping to preserve marine ecosystems and support desert agriculture.

At Rockstar Blends, jojoba isn’t just an ingredient—it’s a cornerstone of our formulations, carefully chosen to bring out the best in every botanical we use. Whether it’s amplifying the effects of terpene-rich plant actives, locking in long-lasting moisture, or soothing even the most sensitive skin, jojoba oil is proof that nature gets it right.
